Boston & Providence Railroad begins regular service.
June 4, 1834
[7/4/1835, 6/11-Heath] The line runs from downtown, over a trestle bridge across the Back Bay, and along Stony Brook, initially to Readville. It connects to East Providence on June 11, 1835 and downtown Providence in 1847. Passengers can subsequently board a steamship in Providence that takes them to New York City. The company was incorporated on June 22, 1831. Freight service begins in 1866. The line is leased to the Old Colony Railroad in 1988, and both are taken over by the New York & New England Railroad until 1898, then by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad until 1968.
